Veterinarian
Hi there! I'm Dr. Jenn Dickinson, an associate Veterinarian at Aspen Veterinary Clinic. Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read more about our amazing, compassionate team of veterinarians and for making an informed decision about your pet's care. Here's a little bit about me:
My journey in veterinary medicine began at Vermont Technical College, where I focused on Equine Sciences. I then transferred to the University of Vermont, graduating with honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences. This academic foundation led me to Midwestern University's College of Veterinary Medicine in Glendale, AZ, where I graduated as valedictorian of my class. However, my commitment to learning didn't end there. I firmly believe in the importance of continuing education, and I regularly participate in courses and workshops to stay abreast of the latest research and advancements in veterinary medicine. This dedication to lifelong learning ensures that I can provide the best possible care for my patients.
Favorite Part of my Job
My love for being a veterinarian stems from the joy I find in helping people and their animals. I am deeply passionate about client education, ensuring pet owners have the resources and information needed to make informed decisions. From preventative care to diagnosing complex diseases, I advocate for your pet's well-being and aim to empower you in their healthcare journey. I'm here to help you help your pets!
At Aspen Veterinary Clinic, I have the privilege of serving a diverse range of patients, including snakes, chickens, rabbits, cats, dogs, horses, goats, and more! With such a varied patient population, my days are always filled with excitement. My current record is five different species seen in one day; my new goal is six!
For me, veterinary medicine is not just a profession, but a constant challenge that I love to tackle. I am regularly humbled by the complexities of this field. I learn new things every day, and no two cases are ever the same! I love using my knowledge and investigative skills to solve difficult medical cases or use my technical abilities to perform life-saving surgeries.
Why I chose this profession
I grew up with a strong passion for animals. Being homeschooled allowed me to delve deeper into that passion, spending much of my younger years working on horse and dairy farms. I spent 10 years in 4-H, showing horses at the local, state, and regional levels, as well as competing in national knowledge competitions. As I entered my high school years, I was inspired by the veterinarians who cared for our horses, cats, dogs, and cows, and so I began working at both a companion animal clinic and an equine hospital. Between these two clinics, I learned so many technical skills and the ins and outs of both small and large animal veterinary care. I also discovered how much I loved helping people. My thirst for knowledge grew, and I realized that, while working as a veterinary technician was an important job, I could offer more to my community. I also spent many years working on an Alpine goat dairy, where my love for small ruminants evolved.
Personal Hobbies & Interests
Originally from Vermont, I've called Flagstaff home for the past two years. I live here with my partner Duncan, his two daughters, and our lively household of pets: Maple Anne the cat, Jaeger the ball python, Teddy the quarter horse, and Archie the jumping spider. While I miss the East Coast, Flagstaff has been a wonderful place to live and work.
Being a Veterinarian is so rewarding but also very demanding. It is so important for all of us veterinarians to maintain a healthy work-life balance so that we can show up as our best selves for you and your pets. Here are a few of my favorite ways to spend my time off:
Weightlifting is one of my most sacred hobbies. I love going to the gym and can often be found in the FAC West weight room! I enjoy other forms of exercise, too, like hiking, trail running, and kayaking.
My partner Duncan leases a crystal mine in central Arizona, and because of him, one of my newest passions has become mining for crystals and other minerals throughout the state and beyond. Recently, we spent a weekend mining pink topaz and bixbyite in Utah!
I thoroughly enjoy art in many forms, from painting to flow arts. Flow arts has been a great way for me to increase my neuroplasticity through physical and creative expression. I can juggle and am working towards being able to perform with fire props! I've really enjoyed learning about the science of "flow state" through flow arts and how it can translate to my veterinary practice.
My other favorite pastimes include gardening/caring for my 35+ houseplants, spending time with my horse Teddy, skiing, and baking!
