James Kaaz DVM

Veterinarian

Hi, I'm Dr. James Kaaz. I am the Lead Veterinarian and Chief of Staff at Western Hills Animal Medical & Surgical Clinic, where I've been practicing since 2009. I earned both my undergraduate and veterinary degrees from Texas A&M University and have over 20 years of experience in small and large animal medicine. After running my own practice in Oklahoma for 11 years, I returned to Texas to focus on surgery before joining Western Hills. I'm passionate about surgery, especially orthopedic and general procedures, and am dedicated to providing compassionate care to my patients. I am also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Favorite Part of my Job

Surgery is my favorite aspect of veterinary medicine. I find great satisfaction in using my creativity and problem-solving skills to tackle challenging cases. My knack for fixing things translates perfectly into my surgical work, particularly orthopedic and general surgery. Each day presents a new challenge, and I love that no two days are ever the same. Helping animals and improving their quality of life is deeply fulfilling, and I’m grateful for the chance to do what I love every day.

Why I chose this profession

My passion for veterinary medicine began in the 10th grade when I was involved in the Future Farmers of America organization. From that point on, I knew this was my true calling. I never considered any other career path, and that determination guided me to where I am today as the primary veterinarian at Western Hills Animal Medical & Surgical Clinic.

Growing up in Spring, Texas, I sought every opportunity to gain experience in the field. I worked in various veterinary hospitals during high school and college, honing my skills and building my knowledge base. I completed both my undergraduate and veterinary studies at Texas A&M University, then practiced in Oklahoma for 11 years. In 2005, I returned to Texas to work as a staff surgeon in Kerrville, specializing in both large and small animal surgeries. Eventually, the desire to be closer to my family led me to Montgomery, where I have proudly been a part of the Western Hills team since 2009.

Personal Hobbies & Interests

I am blessed to share my life with my best friend and wife, Courtney, and our five children: Kade, Tanner, Seth, Jenna, and Stephanie. Our family is passionate about music, with Kade pursuing it as a career and Tanner and Seth both playing guitar and saxophone. Jenna is active in basketball, swimming, and Girl Scouts, while Stephanie enjoys gymnastics and riding her pony. Together, we care for our two dogs, Zeus and Honey, our horse, a pony, and our two cats, Biscuit and Monk.

When I’m not at the clinic or spending time with my family, I enjoy fishing, working in the yard, and cheering on the Texas A&M football team. I also enjoy snow skiing and scuba diving whenever I get the chance.
