Veterinarian and Owner
Dr. John Ensign spent his childhood in northern Nevada, later moving to southern Nevada where he graduated from Clark High School. His love of animals began at age eight with his best friend Fred, a mutt that he owned with his brother, later buying the half share of Fred for $5. He ran away from home once with Fred, who was the only one who understood why.
Upon graduating, he completed a one year internship at the prestigious West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Group. Dr. Ensign then moved back home and opened the first 24-hour animal hospital in Las Vegas.
In September 2013, Dr. Ensign opened Boca Park Animal Hospital, a 9,000 square foot medical, grooming and boarding facility that offers patients the latest technology in a loving environment staffed by caring veterinary nurses and support professionals. The building was completely renovated from the ground up including high-density insulation to reduce noise and stress on animals; a restaurant grade sprinkler system; boarding suites with luxury amenities for furry guests; a separate grooming suite; and a 1,600 square foot exercise area.
Previously, Dr. Ensign served nearly 10 years as Nevada’s representative in the U.S. Senate where he was considered one of the Humane Society’s biggest allies in Congress. In 2005, he received the organization’s Humane Legislator of the Year award for extraordinary leadership in advancing key animal protection laws. With fellow Senators Maria Cantwell (D-Wa.), Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Ca.), Dr. Ensign led sponsorship of the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act, which made it a felony to transport animals across state lines for the purpose of fighting.
Dr. Ensign has also volunteered his services to Heaven Can Wait Animal Society in Las Vegas, which operates a non-profit, low-cost spay and neuter clinic toward the goal of eliminating companion animal suffering and pet overpopulation.
Favorite Part of my Job
Dr. Ensign is skilled in the latest research and new treatments for cats and dogs including laser therapy for wound healing, ear infections and back problems, liver disease, infections, gastrointestinal problems, seizures and behavior problems.
Nutriceuticals are also an important part of his practice, as they help to boost the immune system, combat dermatological issues and provide support for joint health in both cats and dogs.
Why I chose this profession
His interest in veterinary medicine was sparked in the 6th grade through a friend’s father who owned a practice. Fast forward to an internship at a local vet’s office while attending UNLV and he knew that caring for animals was his calling, changing his major from marketing to Pre Vet. He transferred to Oregon State University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree and went on to earn his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University.
Personal Hobbies & Interests
The Ensign household is home to Willie the cat and Luna, a sweet little Golden Retriever. They are devoted to their humans Darlene and John, and their three children Trevor, Siena and Michael.
