Will my dog need post-surgery pain medication?

Yes. If the dog has any type of surgical procedure that causes pain, we always do pain medication. Sometimes that pain medication may be administered in the hospital that will last them afterward. Or we may also send home additional medication for you to continue to give.

So depending on the procedure, the post-surgery pain medication will be dispensed. The majority of our surgical procedures go home with pain medication. Dogs that have had spays, neuters, wound repairs, and mass removals will go home with pain medication. With dental cleanings, they don't always need them afterward. And those will be discussed with you both before and after the procedure.

We do send home pain medications for most of our procedures for pets. It's typically a couple of days of an anti-inflammatory. In certain circumstances, we give another medication just to make the dog more comfortable at home.
