If my dog needs extractions, will he be given pain medication?

Yeah, absolutely. Anything we do in the mouth that is going to cause discomfort, we always treat with pain meds. Even the basic cleaning is going to be somewhat uncomfortable, so we give them pain meds during the procedure. But anything postoperatively that's going to be painful, so for example, with extractions, we numb everything in the mouth before we do anything so they wake up comfortable and we can keep them on less anesthesia. Then, they're going to go home with anti-inflammatories at a minimum and sometimes additional pain medications because pain control is extremely important.

Yes, pain prevention and control are crucial during dental procedures. At Blue Oasis Pet Hospital, all dental patients receive pre-anesthetic pain relievers. If extractions are required, local nerve blocks are administered before the procedure, and anti-inflammatory medications are given during anesthesia. Post-operative pain medications are also prescribed based on the procedure performed.

Definitely. Pain medications are given as part of the anesthesia protocol before the extractions are performed. If there is significant dental disease and pain, and additional treatments are necessary, dogs will receive both injections of pain medication during recovery and oral pain medication to take home. Follow-up appointments can be scheduled if you believe your dog is still experiencing discomfort, and adjustments to the medication may be made if needed.

We believe in full multimodal pain control with all of our dental patients. We usually give them some type of a narcotic pain medication and usually a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, unless there are certain medical conditions that prevent that. Pain medication is usually also given to be taken home for your dog.
