How common are allergies in dogs?

Unfortunately, allergies are relatively common. I would say probably up to 30 or 40% of all dogs have some form of allergies. Some are super mild. We see them on occasion. And other dogs live with them all year round. And those are the dogs we want to spend a lot of time with, making sure we're treating them with the best possible medications and topical therapies we can.

They are a lot more common than you would think. If your dog’s scratching is occasional, that's pretty normal, but your dog should not be scratching nonstop. That is not a normal thing. We see at least a couple of patients a day that will have some type of allergy that we diagnose.

Extremely common. Especially here in Fort Worth, Texas, we see allergies on a daily basis. It is definitely one of the top three things that we come across, and in particular seasons, it is the number one thing we encounter. So it is widespread in dogs.

Pretty common. That's one of the number one reasons we see canine patients. They're coming in with allergic-like symptoms. That includes itchy skin, itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, maybe some hives, some GI problems, vomiting, and diarrhea. We often see those as presenting signs for a lot of our canine patients. Our pet parents bring them in, and these are the things that we hear. Oftentimes, we get to that diagnosis of allergies. Historically, I would say maybe 10 to 20% of our canine patients suffer from some type of allergy.

Allergies are extremely common in dogs, with about 60 to 70% of patients having some kind of allergy. The prevalence of allergies in dogs depends on the area that you live. For example, Greenville is one of the highest pollen producers in the whole country, which contributes to a higher number of allergies.

Allergies are very common in dogs. We see at least several appointments a day about them.
