Forget Me Not: The Rainbow Bridge Journey & Remembering Our Beloved Pets

For so many pet owners, our dogs, cats, birds, pocket pets, and reptiles are the lights of our lives. They’re true members of our families, and many of us even consider them our “children.” With bonds so tight and unbreakable, the passing of a pet can be an incredibly difficult time for pet owners, regardless of the circumstances.

While a pet’s departure can leave behind a silence that's both deafening and deeply felt, the impact that they have on our lives can last long after they’ve passed on – our pets truly leave a paw print on our hearts. With the inevitability of our pets passing on one day, many choose to embrace their pet’s memory and imagine the next step of their journey: The Rainbow Bridge.

In our belief in the Rainbow Bridge, we imagine that beyond the horizon, there is a place where the sun always shines, tails perpetually wag, and purrs vibrate in endless contentment— a haven where our furry, feathered, or finned friends wait for a sweet reunion with their loving owners.

Join us as we celebrate the ideation of the Rainbow Bridge and celebrate the lives of all of the beloved pets who have passed on.

What Is the Rainbow Bridge?

The Legend of the Rainbow Bridge Explained

"The Rainbow Bridge" is a poem written by an unknown author in the 1980s or 1990s. It paints a vivid picture of a meadow where pets go after they pass away. In this meadow, our beloved animals run and play, free from pain or discomfort, waiting for the day they are reunited with their owners. The story in the Rainbow Bridge poem depicts a beautiful bridge connecting to the meadow, and when the reunion finally occurs, both pet and owner cross the bridge together.

These words and visions have since comforted countless pet owners grieving the loss of their beloved pets, offering solace in the idea of a joyful reunion.

The Rainbow Bridge Poem

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together....

Why the Rainbow Bridge Matters

The Rainbow Bridge has become so much more than a poem over the decades since its creation. It has become a comfort to pet owners of all faiths and walks of life, promising relief and happiness for our pets and a sweet reunion for pets and their owners in the afterlife.

The grief of losing a pet can be extreme and incredibly difficult for owners and their families to work through. Everyone, from children to grandparents, may struggle with accepting the loss of a pet and adjusting to life without them. Being able to imagine a lost pet in a beautiful and serene afterlife can greatly comfort grieving pet owners and allow them to process their emotions in a positive way. Some groups even use the concept of the Rainbow Bridge in remembrance ceremonies and other activities, providing a structured outlet for a pet owner’s grief

Not only that, but the Rainbow Bridges offers a gentle introduction to the concept of pet death for children and younger family members and provides reassurance that the child’s pet is not feeling sadness or pain, especially if euthanasia was needed for your pet or the death was unexpected.

The Endless Echo of Love: Remember Our Pets Everyday

As we've said, losing a pet can be a profoundly emotional experience. For many, pets aren't just animals; they are family. They accompany us through life’s highs and lows, providing unconditional love and companionship. Every day is an opportunity to toast to those we have loved and lost.

Ways to Celebrate the Life of a Deceased Pet

  • Light a Candle: One of the simplest yet most poignant ways to remember a pet is by lighting a candle in their honor. The flickering light can symbolize their joy and the warmth they brought into our lives.
  • Share Memories: Talk about your pet, reminisce about the good times and share stories with family and friends. Sharing can be therapeutic and helps keep the memory of your pet alive. Sharing your favorite memories of your pet can also help you better connect with other pet owners and help your healing process as you revel in this new sense of community.
  • Create a Memorial: This could be a photo album, a scrapbook, or even a digital slideshow of your pet's best moments. Another idea is to plant a tree or flowers in your garden to remember your pet. (Forget Me Nots are an easy potted or unpotted flower to remind you of your special one!)
  • Support Animal Charities: In memory of your pet, consider donating to an animal charity or volunteering at a local animal shelter. Your actions can make a difference in the lives of other animals.
  • Connect with Others: Join a pet loss support group, either online or offline, to share your feelings and hear others' stories. Knowing you're not alone can be incredibly comforting.
  • Wear a Token: Wearing a token reminiscent of your pet can be a great way to keep them by your side, even after they’ve passed on. This could be a necklace, a pin, or any other piece of jewelry that reminds you of your pet. Some pet parents have even opted for more permanent tokens of their love for their pets, getting tattoo tributes to their furbabies.

Embracing the Remembrance

In the quiet moments of our hearts, we can still feel their presence — the gentle nudge of a wet nose, the soft brush of fur. These small reminders keep the bond with our beloved pets unbroken. Sharing stories, cherishing pictures, and revisiting memories help keep their spirit alive in our lives. As we remember and celebrate our departed companions, sometimes shedding tears, let's hold onto the belief that every sunset promises a new dawn, and the Rainbow Bridge is just a horizon away.
