History
Since founding Park East in 1961, Dr. Berman has established a reputation as one of New York City's preeminent veterinarians. In addition to building a thriving 24/7 general practice on the cutting edge of the field, Dr. Berman has always dedicated himself to the service of animals that are less fortunate. An alumnus of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, he served on the Cornell University Veterinary College Development Board and the Cornell University Advisory Council. He is a tireless advocate for animals in need of rescue, serving as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bide-A-Wee Home Association from 1992 to 2010, and in 1998 working as Director of the Animal Rescue Foundation of East Hampton, where he remains as Executive Vice President. From 1983 to 1986, Dr. Berman was Campaign Chairman of the Metropolitan Committee for the Morris Animal Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing research for the benefit of animals of all kinds. He continues to represent the Foundation as Trustee Emeritus to this day.
In addition to his devotion to his clients and their animal companions, Dr. Berman's active involvement in the veterinary community has helped to keep Park East at the forefront of veterinary medicine. He served the Veterinary Medical Association of New York City on the Ethics Committee in 1978, as Treasurer in 1979, and as President from 1980-1981, and was recognized by the Association in 1998 as its Veterinarian of the Year. Since 1996, Dr. Berman has maintained Park East as an Accredited Hospital of the American Animal Hospital Association, meeting and exceeding stringent guidelines in over 900 areas of practice and facility management.
To cap off a career marked by achievement at every level, Dr. Berman has ensured that Park East Animal Hospital will be able to continue its mission of providing outstanding, state-of-the-art animal healthcare to each of its patients long into the future. With the transition of responsibility to a strong leadership team including Leah Jackson, VMD (Medical Director) and Vicki Ungar (Practice Manager), Park East today is poised to step forward into its next 55 years of practice with the same commitment to unmatched medical service and compassionate care that has made its first 55 years so remarkable.
We wish Dr. Berman all the happiness in the world in his retirement, filled with family, friends, and his many interests, including travel, opera, and reading. While Dr. Berman's presence and expertise will be missed within these walls, the doctors and staff of Park East Animal Hospital are committed to carrying forward his vision and legacy of providing extraordinary veterinary care and exceptional service to each of our clients and their beloved pets. Thank you, Dr. Berman, and congratulations on an extraordinary career!
