History

Midtown Veterinary Hospital is located in the historic neighborhood of Montrose. Our little corner of Houston is incredibly colorful with a rich history that dates back to 1910 when John Wiley Link, a wealthy lumberman and attorney, envisioned Houston's first upscale master-planned community. J. W. Link formed the Houston Land Corporation and purchased 250 acres just west of downtown Houston. He began designing a streetcar suburb complete with wide boulevards and extensively landscaped public areas.
Over the years, the flavor of the community transformed from an area of austere affluence, evidenced by the beautiful Plaza Apartment Hotel that opened in the 1920s, to a lively community of artists and musicians. In the 1960s and 1970s, the neighborhood's new Bohemian residents created the Westheimer Colony Arts Festival and the subsequent street fair. These events gave birth to the current Bayou City Art Festival, now celebrated twice a year.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the Montrose neighborhood became a favorite spot for a number of unique groups, including hippies and goths. About this time, the gay community joined the neighborhood, adding a distinct personality to this beautifully diverse community. In the 1990s, the Montrose neighborhood became increasingly gentrified with high rents, remodeled bungalows and mansions, and a number of unique restaurants, nightclubs, art galleries, and museums.
Today, Montrose is a vibrant mix of century-old homes, art-centered philanthropies, and one-of-a-kind retail endeavors. The neighborhood is exceptionally pedestrian friendly. You may even spot some of our friends and neighbors enjoying a stroll with their pets along the tree-lined boulevards.
Midtown Veterinary Hospital, located at 1434 West Alabama, happily joins the Montrose community! Next time you're strolling by with your furry friends, stop in for a visit or sit for a while on our front patio.
