Mission

The College of Veterinary Medicine at OSU serves the needs of Oregon, the nation, and the world by training the next generation of practice-ready veterinarians, providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and clinical services, and supporting the continuing education of veterinary practitioners. Biomedical research conducted at the college increasingly expands the scope of veterinary medicine to address both animal health issues and the relevance of animal diseases to public health.

History

The Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital opened in Fall, 1981, to provide education and training to veterinary students, and health care for large animals. In April 2005, the Small Animal hospital opened as a referral resource for veterinarians, providing extended care of companion animals. The hospital is organized into service areas operated by board-certified medical specialists: The cardiology service is dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of dogs and cats with congenital or acquired cardiovascular disease. The internal medicine service is dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of dogs and cats with endocrine, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, or infectious diseases. The oncology service provides diagnostic evaluations and care for animals with cancer. The surgery service treats orthopedic, soft tissue and oncologic surgery cases. The rehabilitation service serves the medical needs of animals with chronic disabilities, as well as those recovery from surgery or injury. To provide the best possible care for hospitalized pets, the hospital operates an intensive care unit that is in service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The hospital was expanded again in May, 2008. Made possible by generous gifts from the Lois Bates Acheson Estate and the Valley Foundation, this project involved remodeling and expansion of diagnostic imaging facilities (including a 64-slice CT unit), construction of an arena and high-speed equine treadmill building for diagnosis of musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary diseases, and construction of new intensive care facilities for large animals.
