History

Healthy Pets of Ohio has a long history in central Ohio. From a single clinic started in 1952 by Dr. Hal Taylor, Sr., Healthy Pets of Ohio has grown to five clinics and is the largest family-run veterinary clinic in the region. Healthy Pets of Ohio grew along with central Ohio has become ingrained in the community by offering compassionate, quality pet care with a hometown touch.

Dr. Hal Taylor, Sr. graduated from The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine in1950 and started a small animal practice on the Westside of Columbus. Dr. Hal H. Taylor Jr. (Doc) followed in his father's footsteps and graduated from The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1970. Doc joined his father's practice and the office moved to a newly renovated facility to accommodate growth. He and his father practiced in that office together for eight years. Upon Dr. Taylor Sr.'s retirement from veterinary medicine, Dr. Taylor Jr. (Doc) assumed full responsibility of the practice.

During the 1980's, there were a lot of changes and growth in veterinary medicine. With technology changing so rapidly, Doc began designing computer software, VETWARE, which could be utilized in a veterinary hospital to maintain patient data. Today, Healthy Pets of Ohio continues to utilize the best technology for hospital information systems available.

A second practice was opened in Hilliard in 1993. This facility added the capability to board and groom. A third practice was added in Grove City in 1994. This facility is also a full-service clinic with full medical and boarding facilities. In 1997, Westgate moved into a new state-of-the-art facility with a full-service lab, grooming and boarding. This move increased office size to almost three times the size of the old building.

In mid-1999, the names were changed for all locations to Healthy Pets of Ohio, thus maintaining their own identities but providing continuity across the company. In late 1999, ground was broken for the next facility, Healthy Pets of Ohio of Wedgewood in Powell. This location was the largest thus far.

A third generation of Taylors joined the family tradition of becoming veterinarians. Dr. Hal Taylor III (Chip) graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003 and serves as the lead veterinarian at Healthy Pets of Ohio of Wedgewood.

A fifth hospital, Healthy Pets of Ohio of Lewis Center, opened in 2008; this state-of-the art facility continues the Healthy Pets of Ohio tradition of staying at the forefront of veterinary medicine.

Dr. Taylor Jr. (Doc) has had many achievements throughout his career, including serving as the past President of the CAVM, past District Representative of OVMA, Central Ohio District Representative for AAHA, member of the Ohio Animal Health Foundation, and receiving the OVMA award for Outstanding Contribution to the Ohio Animal Health Foundation. He is an active member of Kiwanis, AVMA, OVMA, CAVM, AAHA, Mason, Scottish Rite and the Shriners Associations.

Dr. Hal Taylor III (Chip), has served as President, and as a board member, on the Board of Trustees for the Alumni Society of the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine. He is active within the AVMA, OVMA and AAHA.
