We realize that you know your pet better than anyone else; through our practice of a team-based method of care that allows our medical staff to work and communicate directly with individual owners, we are able to provide the best possible care solutions for each unique patient. Part of our success with this approach is stability; our newest doctor joined the team more than seven years ago, while the others have each been with us for more than a decade.

History
South Hyland Pet Hospital was founded in 1974 by Dr. James A. Libby. Dr. Libby graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1959. After graduation he practiced for several years and went on to receive a Master's of Science degree from the Ohio State University in 1965. After graduation, he was an instructor at the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine and then assistant professor at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. He also held a veterinary position at the United States Department of Agriculture for five years.
dr_libby1_1Dr. Libby founded South Hyland Pet Hospital in 1974 at our current location. Under his excellent care and leadership, it grew from a one doctor clinic to the multi-doctor hospital that it is today. He obtained the prestigious certification from the American Animal Hospital Association, which we still maintain. By doing this, Dr. Libby ensured that our clients and patients would always receive only the very best care. In 1985, Dr. Libby pursued an interest in advanced dentistry and became one of the first practitioners skilled in this important area of pet care. He established South Hyland Pet Hospital as a leader in dentistry for both our own patients and those referred by other veterinary clinics. Dr. Libby maintained the most progressive veterinary practices possible as he grew and developed the clinic.
Throughout his veterinary career Dr. Libby received numerous awards. He was honored as a distinguished alumnus at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. He was named the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association's Veterinarian of the year in 1981, and received the MVMA's President's Award in 1995. He served as board member and president of the MVMA, and was very active with the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Foundation. He earned the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award as well.
Dr. Libby was also very active in the community at large. He was president of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Bloomington Lion's Club. He was a board member of the Bloomington Education Foundation, and was appointed by the Governor to the Minnesota Health Advisory Committee. Dr. Libby also received the WCCO Good Neighbor Award. Dr. Libby was an avid golfer, fisherman, traveler and family man. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, Patricia, their three children, and seven grandchildren.
Dr. James A. Libby passed away on January 8, 2010. He had been retired since 2004 from South Hyland, but maintained close contact with the clinic thereafter. He was a great man who contributed much to the veterinary and general communities. We are especially honored for his establishment of South Hyland Pet Hospital and our tradition of upholding high standards in veterinary medicine.
