History
The year was 1980 and a wonderful little lady (Guila Manchester) who lived in Citrus County was very angry because she wanted to help an injured dog that had been hit by a car in Hernando County. She could not find anyone in Hernando County to help, the humane organizations of Citrus County would not help financially because the dog was in Hernando County. She took the dog to Midway Animal Hospital and Dr. Nayfield performed the surgery. The dog was helped and Guila paid the bill. This experience was so upsetting to Guila that she began to formulate a plan to establish an organization that would be able to service any animal in the state of Florida. The Humanitarians of Florida came into the existence on May 1, 1980 and was issued a 501(c) (3) July of 1980.The mission for the Humanitarians of Florida was to open a low cost spay neuter clinic in Citrus County but there were to be no county lines for service. Anyone in Florida could use the clinic. In 1980, the first year the organization had statements of income and expenditures we had total income of $602.85. We paid out 5.36 for medicine, 25.00 to euthanize one animal. Spent 92.00 on medical. We spayed or neutered 9 animals for a cost of 140.00. Our total medical cost was $262.36. In the year 2017 we serviced 14,203 pets. Our total income was over $981,000.00. Our expenses were $970,000.00 The Humanitarians of FL have spayed or neutered over 50,000 cats and dogs since 1980. We opened our spay or neuter clinic in 2003 on the corner of Conant and 44 and moved to our new location on the corner of Commerce Terrace and 44 in 2014.
