Just like the milkweed growing in our garden and the black-capped chickadees at our bird feeders, the Kanouse family is native to the Hudson Valley.

Dr. Kanouse, an ardent advocate for the environment, could once be found on the sloop Clearwater, a majestic 106-foot long replica vessel that is recognized today as America's Environmental Flagship. Along with his friends, he would bring people to the Hudson River to experience its beauty and be moved to preserve it.

His wife, Pat, a lifetime resident of the area, recalls hiking along the peak of Anthony's Nose - a mountain at the north end of Westchester County - with her father, two brothers, and her dog as a child, and swimming in the Hudson on the weekends and after school. Today, she contributes her skill, passion, and love for the area to organizations such as Scenic Hudson, Riverkeeper, and the Putnam Humane Society.

The same can be said of their son, Evan, who grew up exploring the small towns and unique places our region is known for. He currently sits on the board of the Pawling Resource Center, a community food pantry in Dutchess County, and is a local educator. He also spearheads our community and sustainability initiatives as our Hospital Director.

To join Brook Farm is to join our extended family; to take part in caring for and cherishing the people and pets that make our community so unique. We envision a world in which all living creatures live in harmony with each other and with the earth. You will find that our staff lives by this same ethos, at the heart of which is serving others by treating them with love, empathy and respect.

Together we heal, communicate, and build peace. We welcome you with this in mind. Please reach out to us if we can be of service.

History

The name "Brook Farm" dates back to 1840, when philosopher George Ripley announced that he was planning to form a new kind of community in the Massachusetts countryside.

Brook Farm, as it would be called, was founded on the idea that people were inherently good. Connection with the people, animals, and flora and fauna of the community would bring about our true nature - a state that Ripley described as "harmony." This idea was predicated on the belief that equality, education, and freedom were all necessary for the common good.

Today, Brook Farm Veterinary Center draws upon these same values. We believe that harmony is achieved when animals, people, and the environment are each treated with equal concern.
